Camille Condon

A portrait photo of Camille CondonI'm a manufacturing graduate. After years working in this industry, I needed to find something better suited to my physical abilities. I began my own craft business. I now work from home, selling my handmade creations via my online shop and at various craft markets. I only discovered my love of creative writing after starting a craft blog.

My passions include craft, art, music and food. I try to always stay positive and to live life to the full. I would like to help in educating the community about the struggles of living with a disability. I would also like to help improve access to services for those of us who need them.

Environmental tips for renters

There are some simple changes you can make for your rental home to be more environmentally friendly. These changes can also save you money on your electricity, gas and water bills. You may need to buy some cheap items but you can then take these to your next home. Thick curtains help keep a room warm and the cold outside. Switch off electrical goods when you're not using them. Have quicker showers and wash your clothes in cold water. Call your landlord or property manager if you need repairs done. Take notice of your daily habits and see where you can make changes.

Op shopping

Opportunity shops, or op shops, sell used items at cheap prices. They sell clothing, homewares and furniture. Shopping at op shops has many benefits. Buying used items encourages recycling and sustainability. Op shops organisations use profits from their shops to help people in need in the community. The largest and most well-known op shop organisations are The Salvos stores and Vinnies Centres. You can find many unique and discounted items. Many Salvos and Vinnies Centres stores are accessible. People with disabilities are welcome to volunteer at the stores. They will be given duties that match their abilities.

Donate life

This week is Donate Life Week. There are about 1600 people on the waiting list for an organ transplant. I have chronic lung disease. I am waiting for a double lung transplant. More people than ever are donating their organs in Australia. But we still have low numbers of organ donors compared to other countries. When a person dies their family is often too upset to think about organ donation. The most important thing you can do is to talk about your donation wishes with your family and friends.

Organising and de-cluttering

I recently went to an organising workshop. It was inspiring. I learned a lot of useful information. I learned how to become more organised in my home and business. The advice has helped me keep my home neat and tidy. I want to share some of the best tips and tricks I learned. A good tip is to put things away. Another good idea is to keep a box for charity. I have made changes in my home. I can already see improvements.

Help for drivers with disability

I use my car every day. It gives me freedom. It is my link to the world. Keeping my car maintained is important. But I need help filling the car with petrol. The Driveway Assist program helps people with a disability. At some service stations you can just honk your horn to get help. Someone will come out and fill your car with petrol. The VACC recommends talking to service, repair and cleaning companies about any needs you might have. It is also a good idea to pay for roadside assistance. Someone will help if your car has a problem.
