Have your say about school

A young girl reading a book

The Victorian Government wants to hear about the experiences of school students with a disability. The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission is conducting the research. Complaints about students being treated unfairly have been increasing. Students, parents, educators and community organisations can all have a say. You can complete a survey. There will also be special information sessions in regional Victoria in February 2012. Community organisations can also submit written responses.

A DiVine birthday

Three members of the band Rudely Interupted play a song while DiVine writer Heidi Everett joins in on guitar

December 3 is DiVine's birthday. Research found people with a disability wanted their own place on the web. DiVine was the result. There are 35 people who now write for DiVine. All DiVine writers have disabilities. The site now has over 500 articles. There have been many highlights over the past two years. One highlight was Carly Findlay winning an award for her DiVine articles. Graeme Turner also got a job as a writer for Vision Australia. You can let us know about your favourite DiVine articles.

Work on insurance schemes starts now

A man is being assisted out of a wheelchair by a lifting machine operated by a woman next to him

The Australian Government will start work immediately to build towards a national disability insurance scheme. It will work with Australian states and territories on the scheme. The Productivity Commission has released its final report into the disability care and support system. The commission recommended the scheme be created. A scheme would provide support to all Australians who acquire a significant disability. The commission also recommended a national injury insurance scheme. But agreement on the schemes has not yet been reached. The commission believes it will take at least seven years to transform disability services.

Having your say

A man with a beard who is wearing a suit jacket is speaking into a microphone.

You can take part in a new survey. The survey asks your opinions on a range of different topics. You will be asked about topics like your health and things you do for fun. The answers will be used to better understand the views and needs of people with a disability. Governments will then be asked to help improve people’s lives. An Easy English version of the survey is available.
